Minimally Invasive Surgery

Minimally Invasive Surgery is the preferred surgical approach for many conditions. Unlike open surgery, which usually requires a long incision, minimally invasive procedures are much less complicated and are performed through one or more dime sized incisions, with much less trauma to the body. The number of incisions depends on the surgery, but the goal is to use fewer and smaller incisions.

Although laparoscopic techniques vary, this less invasive type of surgery usually involves a surgeon inserting an endoscope, a long thin tube with a lighted camera at its tip, through a small incision. The camera sends a two-dimensional image of the surgical site to a high-definition monitor, which the surgeon watches during the operation.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery Include:

  • Better visualization
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Fewer complications
  • Smaller scars
  • Faster recovery time

CMC Women's Institute is proud to announce Dr. Kevin Stepp will be joining our team Summer 2010. Dr. Stepp completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at MetroHealth/ Cleveland Clinic. He then completed a 3 year combined fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Urogynecology/Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Stepp has used or evaluated every almost every new surgical technology used in gynecologic laparoscopy to date. He is one of only a handful of surgeons currently performing Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site (LESS), a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery.
